Supporting those in need

With a campus situated in Toronto’s downtown core, Ryerson is deeply engaged with the community and neighbourhoods. At this time of year, we are reminded that we can amplify our impact by supporting the United Way Greater Toronto campaign which provides a vital safety net for thousands of people a year, both in times of stability and crisis. From poverty and food insecurity to youth unemployment and unstable housing, the COVID-19 pandemic has only intensified these issues.
For that reason this year’s United Way Greater Toronto campaign theme, making issues unignorable, is more important than ever. Though there are many organizations in the GTA that are committed to tackling critical social and economic challenges, the United Way is Ryerson’s longtime charity of choice. Over the past five years, Ryerson has raised over $1-million for local agencies (external link) through the annual fall campaign.
As the largest investor in social services in the GTA, second only to the government, the United Way’s network of community agencies and supports tackle local poverty and related issues, such as social isolation and mental health. They are also committed to helping those in the GTA recover from the pandemic. Since the start of the crisis, the United Way has been convening with their partners and local governments to ensure there are no gaps in essential services or emergency needs met.
Though this year’s campaign is being run virtually, there are many ways to get involved and make an impact. In addition to donating through Ryerson, there are also opportunities to become an ambassador both in-person and remotely (external link) . For example, the United Way is looking for volunteers to write handwritten letters to isolated seniors and frontline workers, as well as conduct virtual mock interviews for job seekers.
