Mitch Frazer, chair of the Ryerson Board of Governors, has been appointed the next chancellor of Ontario Tech University (University of Ontario Institute of Technology).

With the appointment, Frazer will be stepping down as a board appointee and as the chair of the Board effective June 30, 2020.

“On behalf of the Ryerson community I congratulate Mitch on his appointment as chancellor of Ontario Tech University and extend my sincerest gratitude for his enthusiastic commitment and service to Ryerson over the past eight years,” said President Mohamed Lachemi. “In addition to his invaluable leadership during a time of important growth and change for our university, Mitch has shown time and again that he cares deeply about the well-being of our students. We will miss his energy and vision, but we will forever consider him a Ryersonian.”

Frazer was first appointed to the Ryerson Board of Governors in 2012, elected vice-chair of the Board in June 2016 and chair in July 2018. He is a partner and the chair of the Pensions and Employment Practice at Torys LLP.

During Frazer’s tenure as chair of the Ryerson Board, significant developments included the launch of the Future Skills Centre and the Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst. He is also the founder of the National Institute on Ageing at the Ted Rogers School of Management. His tremendous work on behalf of the Ryerson Faculty of Law will be a singular part of his legacy. The law school has benefitted immensely from Frazer’s involvement as a tireless advocate, establishing connections deep into the law community to build awareness and gain support.

Ryerson has started the process to select the next chair of the Ryerson Board of Governors. Pursuant to Board by-laws, the opening of nominations for chair will commence in May when the Executive Committee, acting on behalf of the Board of Governors, meets. Updates will continue to be provided to the Ryerson community as this process moves forward.
