Marco A. Fiola named Fellow at Massey College

Ryerson Languages, Literatures and Cultures professor Marco A. Fiola has been selected as the 2019/2020 Ryerson Fellow at Massey College (external link) — a prestigious honour that provides space and resources to pursue research.
Affiliated with (but independent from) the University of Toronto, Massey College brings together visiting scholars, distinguished professionals, and full-time graduate students from across disciplines into a stimulating intellectual community. The Massey Fellowship is the result of a partnership between Ryerson and the college, facilitating the annual appointment of a Ryerson faculty member for a one-year research residence.
“This appointment provides me with optimal conditions to focus on my research projects in lexicography and translation,” said Fiola. “The research projects I conduct are mostly solitary, although I do work more efficiently and productively when surrounded by peers, and Massey College will give me a space away from my usual work and an intellectually stimulating environment. This fellowship is an honour and a privilege.”
Fiola has just completed nine years in two administrative positions at Ryerson. His research interest is two-pronged: translation theory and lexicography-terminology, and current projects include the annotated French version of five Massey Lectures, research on 18th and 19th century missionary linguistics in Canada as well as two multilingual glossaries to be used by language professionals working in legal and mental health settings.
Fiola holds a bachelor of arts and a master of arts from the Université de Montréal, and a PhD from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle. He has authored or coauthored more than 100 publications, in several languages. He was president of the Canadian Association for Translation Studies, an experience that served him well as he stepped into the role of academic convener for the Congress of the Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences, held at Ryerson in 2017. Currently, he sits on the Board of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario, where he represents terminologists.

Fiola is the eighth Ryerson professor to be named a fellow at Massey College. Previous appointees include Maria Gurevich and Frank Russo from the Department of Psychology, Michael Coutanche from the RTA School of Media, Mehrunnisa Ahmad Ali from the School of Early Childhood Studies, Lorraine Janzen Kooistra from the Department of English, John Shields from the Department of Politics and Public Administration, Anthony Bonato from the Department of Mathematics and Dae Kun (Rilla) Hwang from the Department of Chemical Engineering.
Andrew Millward, professor, Geography and Environmental Studies and Deborah de Lange, professor, Global Management Studies have been named visiting scholars at Massey College for the 2019-20 year. They will have their own set of privileges while holding this appointment.
