New appointments
I am pleased to share news of several appointment changes in my office and at TRSM with the Ryerson community.
Chris Evans has been appointed as Ryerson’s Executive Lead to advance academic planning for the proposed Brampton Initiative. Chris will be responsible for overseeing the conceptualization and development of academic programs and partnerships. The appointment will take effect on January 1, 2018.
Chris has been at Ryerson for nearly 20 years. He has a well-earned reputation for his open, respectful and collaborative leadership, and has contributed to the community in a variety of roles: first as a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biology, then as chair of the department, associate dean, and in 2010 he was appointed vice-provost, academic.
As vice-provost, academic, Chris led a number of ambitious developments including a major redesign of the undergraduate curriculum structure and the rollout of a university-wide quality assurance process. He led a number of key Senate committees including academic standards, and learning and teaching, was Ryerson’s central liaison with the Quality Council of the Council of Ontario Universities, and was a very strong supporter of student success.
Most recently, Chris served as interim provost and vice-president, academic from December 2015 to July 2017. During his time as interim provost, Chris was instrumental in advancing key priorities of the university including feasibility studies for a law school and a strong focus on student support and retention. Chris also helped develop the Expression of Interest for the proposed Brampton initiative, along with the early stages of the proposal preparation before he completed his term, providing him with a familiarity with the Brampton initiative and many of the key stakeholders involved.
Marcia Moshé will be extended in her role as interim vice-provost, academic to June 30, 2018.
Marcia has over 20 years of experience in university academic administration at Ryerson and the Faculty of Arts. She has served as interim vice-provost, academic since Dec. 1, 2015, playing a lead role in planning and implementing key academic initiatives such as the renewal of Ryerson's undergraduate curriculum model and the review of five academic policies.
Marcia has also provided excellent leadership in chairing the Academic Standards Committee, the Curriculum Implementation Committee and co-chairing the Academic Policy Review Committee. She has also overseen the Office of Academic Integrity, the Experiential Learning Office, the Learning & Teaching Office, and Curriculum Quality Assurance.
The search for the next vice-provost, academic will begin in the New Year, and I will keep the community informed as the process moves forward.
Avner Levin has been appointed interim dean for the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM), for a six-month period starting January 8, 2018. Avner replaces Steven Murphy, who becomes University of Ontario Institute Technology’s (UOIT) next president and vice-chancellor.
Avner brings to the position considerable experience in business and law, as well as strong and committed academic leadership. He is currently a professor at the Ted Rogers School of Management in law and business, and holds multiple leadership roles within TRSM. Avner heads Ryerson University’s Law Research Centre, and is the director of the Privacy and Cyber Crime Institute.
Avner’s research interests include the legal regulation and protection of privacy and personal information in various sectors across jurisdictions within Canada and internationally.
I would like to thank Chris, Marcia and Avner for accepting these appointments. Please join me in congratulating them and wishing them all great success.
Michael Benarroch
