Other roads to take

Convocation is here and for many graduates it opens the door to new directions.

The Career Centre offers tips on roads to take following graduation in their career and job search guide, Career Compass.

• Graduate school: Pursuing a master’s or PhD will allow you to delve into an area of interest and can increase the chances to reach high-level positions within industry and research institutions, including academia.
• Continuing education: Taking a certificate program can also give you the skills and knowledge to progress in your chosen field without the commitment of a full-time degree. The Chang School offers close to 90 different certificate programs, many of which count towards professional designations in areas such as project management and human resources management. • Working abroad: To remain competitive and relevant in this climate, employers in many industries and sectors are looking for employees who can bring international perspectives and skills to the table. Benefits of working abroad include adaptability, independence, maturity, cross-cultural interpersonal and communication skills, increase in professional contacts and personal development. There are challenges as well but researching your destination thoroughly and planning ahead gives you a leg up in creating a worthwhile experience.
• The entrepreneurial route: Global changes in technology and education are favouring the creation of new small businesses. Mauricio Meza, 2010 MBA grad and co-founder and CEO of Komodo OpenLab Inc. at the DMZ changed his course of action after completing his undergrad. During his B.Sc. his goal was to design medical equipment but then he became interested in technology commercialization and product development. He and his business partner started Komodo OpenLab (external link)  to address the need for accessible and inclusive technology for individuals with disabilities.
