Aboriginal Initiatives in the Office of the Vice-President, Equity and Community Inclusion (OVPECI) is offering beading workshops to the Indigenous community at our campus (including students, staff, faculty, sessional instructors, alumni, graduates, etc.) as one of the responses to the ongoing uncovering of undocumented burial sites at Indian Residential Schools.
We are working from a perspective of the "long view" of the impacts, especially given additional burial sites have been discovered and we anticipate more will come. We are working to provide additional gathering spaces and expression for Indigenous community members, which will be sent via email.
Beading and engaging in creative activities are known to be therapeutic. Beading can be a soothing stress reliever, a productive way to pass time, and a way to keep hands busy and minds at ease. It can help keep you from focusing too much on all of the strong emotions associated with grief and trauma at once, giving you a chance to turn your focus, however temporarily, on maintaining the pattern of your beadwork.
Workshops will be facilitated by Cher Trudeau (Administrative Assistant, Aboriginal Initiatives; Coordinator, Aboriginal Education Council; and Co-Chair, First Nations, Métis & Inuit Community Group) for beginner and intermediate beaders.
Your email is being recorded, so that we may invite you to this online event via Zoom.
This event was organized by Aboriginal Initiatives and Aboriginal Student Services (RASS) in the OVPECI, with thanks and appreciation to Human Resources for their contributions and sponsorship.
