When Peripheries Speak: Claims of Justice from Southern Algérie

This talk examines the recent popular mobilizations in Southern Algeria in relation to the historical ties that Algerian Saharan zones have had with the “center” in Algeria. In recent years news on Algeria has been dominated by a focus on securitization and the fight against Islamist armed groups in the Sahel, and the ‘competing’ massive immigrant movement originating from Sub-Saharan countries.  Little has been said about the importance of mobilizations in Southern Algeria on the transformation of the relations between Algerian peripheries and the political regime. This paper explores the claims made by the population regarding “national integration” and national history.
