Toronto Metropolitan University Working with Egyptian Government on Solutions for TMU Cairo Students
TORONTO,ON - Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) has announced that due to unforeseen circumstances, the university has made the difficult decision to not admit new students to programs at TMU-Cairo, located in Cairo, Egypt.
“As a university committed to extending a high-quality, student-centred education to a larger international audience, this was a very difficult decision to make, but necessary as we could not deliver our programs to the required standards given lack of infrastructure and appropriate facilities at our branch campus at this time,” says Mohamed Lachemi, President and Vice-Chancellor, Toronto Metropolitan University.
Leaders are working with stakeholders on future plans for the 39 students who are currently enrolled at TMU Cairo to determine the best pathways to continue and complete their education. This includes offering students to come to Toronto or supporting them in finding an alternative option locally in Egypt. The university has ensured that Egypt’s Ministry of Higher Education is continually informed on each decision students are making in this process.
“We remain committed to creating opportunities to increase access to education for all students no matter where they call home,” says Lachemi. “We know the transformational power of a TMU education, whether it’s welcoming international students to Toronto or building local capacity abroad to teach, research, and create experiential learning opportunities.”
While the nature of the university's arrangement has changed for now, TMU remains in discussion with other partners in the country, region and government of Egypt on ways it can continue to partner to provide quality education on a global scale.
This change does not affect DMZ Cairo, which has been successfully operating since 2021. The DMZ is working with high-potential tech entrepreneurs in Egypt, providing them with access to workspace, programming, mentorship, and the North American startup ecosystem.
“Cairo is well connected to the rest of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, as well as to Europe and North America,” says Lachemi. “We’d like to continue growing in the region and advance TMU’s commitment to access to education on a global stage.”
