Mathematics professor and pedagogy expert, Dr. Francis Duah

Mathematics professor Francis Duah has been appointed as a Teaching Fellow with the university’s Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CELT). He is one of three professors to join the fellowship’s second cohort, running from June 2022 to May 2024. The fellowship is part of the university’s commitment to continually advance excellence in teaching and leadership in pedagogy.

Duah is one of the inaugural professors in the Faculty of Science to lead research in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education. Over the next two years of the fellowship, Duah will explore a relatively new pedagogical model called the faculty-student partnership. In contrast to unilateral approaches driven solely by faculty, this new movement allows students and professors to co-create courses and learning/teaching experiences.

Duah will create such a partnership model for two mathematics courses offered at the university. He will research the impact of having students and faculty jointly determine learning outcomes and alignment with learning activities and assessments. As interest in faculty-student partnerships grows, Duah’s work could provide further insight into the model’s effectiveness in enhancing student engagement and achievement, not only in mathematics but also in other academic programs.

As part of the fellowship, Duah will also work together with CELT staff and Teaching Fellows to identify gaps in pedagogy, and subsequently create training workshops, mentorships and other resources to meet those needs.
