Biography
Jonny’s journey into digital media began with learning HTML and CSS, creating rudimentary websites for the early 2000s blogosphere. While attending Queen’s University, they explored unconventional filmmaking in an experimental film course, igniting a passion for creative expression. After graduation, Jonny moved to the Yukon Territory, spending several years managing and marketing in the service industry, gaining tangible professional and personal skills.
Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jonny transitioned to TV, working as a Digital Imaging Technician on the show Gold Rush. During this period, Jonny also rekindled their creative passions, delving into experimental filmmaking with local mentors and making ambient electronic music during the long, dark winter months.
The discovery of visual-programming software TouchDesigner rekindled a fascination with digital media, leading Jonny to explore other artistic tools including Ableton, Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine, Virtual and Augmented Realities and Artificial Intelligence. Recent projects include nationally and globally screened experimental short films, an artist residency and grant to document local Yukon musicians, live audio-visual performance, curation and exhibitions of interactive installations.
Why Digital Media?
I am captivated by the power of digital media because of its ability to create incredibly visceral and engaging experiences that resonate and push the boundaries of what audiences have previously experienced. Witnessing the groundbreaking of Sphere in Las Vegas and experiencing Superblue in Miami has only reinforced my belief in the untapped potential of digital media and the arts, compelling me to be at the forefront of its evolution.
