2024 Lincoln Alexander Law Mooting Results

Walsh Family Law Moot and Negotiation

The Walsh Family Moot competition is open to 2nd and 3rd-year law students and is intended to develop relationships between law schools and practitioners. With a focus on the study of Family Law, this year’s competition took place on March 9, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario. 

The Lincoln Alexander Law moot team, represented by Sarah Bonner-Proulx, Maha Khawaja, Felisia Milana and Margarita Rodriguez Simon, brought home the Top Overall Team award for the second year in a row! Margarita Rodriguez Simon was additionally awarded the Second Top Oralist award.

Alyssa Shi and Chloe Wang diligently represented Lincoln Alexander Law in the Walsh Family Law Negotiation, representing clients over 3 rounds of negotiations.  

We would like to give a special thank you to Geoff Carpenter, whose unwavering dedication to coaching our team led them to a second consecutive top team finish!

Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition took place in Ottawa on February 22nd - 24th, 2024. It is the largest moot competition in the world with participants from approximately 700 law schools and 100 countries and jurisdictions. Participants presented arguments based on a fictional dispute between various countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. 

Lincoln Alexander Law was proudly represented by Esther Chung, Christopher Howard, Avani Joshi, and Greame Stevens at the Canadian competition. James Noronha acted as a student coach and demonstrated an incredible amount of dedication in getting this year's team to the finish line. We had another incredibly strong showing at the Jessup Moot and the students received phenomenal feedback from the judges and other teams. Christopher Howard and Avani Joshi received the award for Third Place Respondent's Factum.

We are incredibly grateful to Professor Uche Ngwaba and coaches Mannu Chowdhury, Kartiga Thavaraj, and Daniel Yip for their incredible guidance and support over the last 6 months.

Wilson Moot

The Wilson Moot is designed to promote justice for those disempowered within the legal system and was held in Toronto on February 23- 24, 2024. It was the law school's first time participating in this moot. Adam Binhammer, Kristen Hogg, Shelby Seymour, and David Ventura represented Lincoln Alexander Law wonderfully. 

Sabrina Khela supported Lincoln students as the team's researcher. We'd like to thank Professor Ed Béchard-Torres and coaches Michelle Biddulph and Christopher Lutes for guiding our students with their expertise! 

Harold G. Fox IP Moot

The Harold G. Fox IP Moot took place in Toronto, Ontario on February 23- 24, 2024. The moot, which has a unique focus on intellectual property, provides participants with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of IP law while connecting with experts in the field. Lincoln Alexander Law, once again, had a very strong showing. The law school's researcher, Allison Maitre, supported both our Appellant team, Carly Agro and Jill Crich, and Respondent team, Rachel Pham and Kendra Tatemichi, who all performed fantastically. Both Teams were ranked in the top three of their respective appellant and respondent tracks, and the Respondent team made it to the semi-final round. Additionally, Rachel Pham was awarded runner-up for the Best Oralist award across all students who participated in the moot competition. 

We'd like to thank Professor Alexandra Mogyoros and coaches Tracey Doyle and Laura MacDonald for their continuous and unwavering commitment and support of our Fox Moot team.

Donald G. Bowman Tax Moot

The Donald G. Bowman Tax Moot was held on March 1-2, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario and is the first competitive moot in Canada that focuses on taxation. Zain Ahmed, Muskan Balagan, Ethan Pereira and Michael Silkstone provided a strong presence for the Lincoln Alexander Law team with Muskan Balagan and Ethan Pereira finishing as semi-finalists. 

We would like to give a special thank you to coaches Josiah Davis, Roger Smith and Michael Ezri.

Gale Cup Moot

The Gale Cup Moot Competition is an annual, bilingual, law school moot that took place on February 9-10, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario. Each team had the opportunity to present their arguments before esteemed judges. Nisha Baig, Rosie Dhillon, Nabila Farid, Nev Perera, and Noelle Sagher did a stellar job representing Lincoln Alexander Law. Nisha Baig and Nev Perera, with support from Noelle Sagher received recognition for their factum, as runners up for the top factum.  

We would like to thank our coaches Chris Rudnicki and Veenu Goswami for their phenomenal support of the Lincoln Alexander Law team!

Julius Alexander Isaac Moot

The Julius Alexander Moot is an annual moot held by the Black Law Students’ Association of Canada on February 1-3, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario. The moot is named after the late Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Appeal, Julius Alexander Isaac, who was the first Black Judge to sit on the Federal Court of Canada. The Julius Alexander Moot provides students with the opportunity to discuss and argue issues of equity, diversity, and critical race theory. The moot problem was again written by Lincoln Alexander Law’s Professor Joshua Sealy-Harrington.

This year, Nefisa Ansong, Jaedon Wyndham, Grace Godden and Julie Matheson marvellously represented the law school! We would like to express a heartfelt thank you to our amazing coaches, Dena Bonnet, Theresa Donkor, and Chetan Muram, for all their dedicated time and efforts in working with the team.

Kawaskimhon Moot

This year’s Kawaskimhon Moot was held on March 8-9, 2024 in Kamloops, British Columbia on the traditional territory of the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc. The Kawaskimhon moot draws on Indigenous legal traditions in conjunction with federal, provincial and intercalation legal concepts on dispute resolution. The goal of the moot is for teams to reach a consensus on the issue at hand, it provides students with the opportunity to develop a more robust understanding of indigenous legal issues, alternative dispute resolution and Aboriginal law.

Cassandra McDonald, Jeremiah Bowers-Vandusen and Sabrina Khela proudly represented the Lincoln Alexander Law team. We are extremely grateful to our coaches Corey Shefman and Darian Baskatawang for championing and supporting the team.

Canadian Client Consultation Competition

The Canadian Client Consultation Competition is a competitive moot where students participate in a law office consultation. Students act as lawyers and conduct a client intake interview, which is followed by a post-consultation period. This year’s competition took place in Windsor, Ontario, on March 9-10, 2024 with a focus on International Humanitarian Law.

Nicolas Moon, Helen Zhang, Jenna Riina, and Ikra Saeed were an outstanding representation of the Lincoln Alexander team! Our teams were once again the only teams of 1L students. Jenna Riina and Ikra Saeed placed second while Helen Zhang and Nick Moon finished third.

Canadian National Negotiation Competition

The Canadian National Negotiation Competition (CNNC) is a competitive moot that encourages non-litigation forms of dispute resolution. Students have the opportunity to develop their oral advocacy, and negotiation skills in a multiparty simulation scenario. This year, the CNNC took place in Montreal, Quebec on March 1-2, 2024.

Anasofia Heilbron, Aman Johal, Thanu Jude Xavier and Ayena Zahid did an excellent job representing the Lincoln Alexander team! We would like to thank our coaches, Camille Walker and Alexandra Murray who dedicated their time, effort and support to the team.

National Labour Arbitration Competition

Linconal Alexander Law made its second appearance at the National Labour Arbitration Competition (NLAC) this February. A truly unique competition, the NLAC saw Sherene Furnell and Hesham Ghobarah act as both Union counsel and Management Counsel in an arbitration-packed weekend. We’d like to thank Kalye Duff for her meaningful coaching and upper-year students Kanwar Brar and Lindsay Poole for acting as student coaches.

Arnup Cup

The Arnup Cup is an annual trial advocacy competition. The Arnup Cup, unlike most moots, which are appeals, is a simulated trial which provides students with the opportunity to present a full case, including opening and closing arguments, examination in chief and cross examination, and challenging evidence issues. Mus'ab Abu-Ali and Ever Imafidon proudly represented Lincoln Alexander Law in our first Arnup Cup. We’d like to thank coaches Agapi Mavridis and Eadit Rokach for sharing their experiences and dedicating so much of their time to the competition.
