Angela Misri appointed as a tenure-stream Assistant Professor
On behalf of Dean Charles Falzon, Journalism at The Creative School is pleased to announce that Angela Misri has been appointed as a tenure-stream Assistant Professor starting July 1, 2023.
Misri’s love of journalism started as a teenager in Calgary when she worked as a stringer at the Calgary Herald print newspaper. Since then she has become a seasoned and award-winning journalist at the CBC and The Walrus with a deep grounding in the digital futures of the profession. Reflecting on her experiences as a South Asian woman who has experienced the absence of diversity across many newsrooms, over the years Misri has been an active mentor to women of colour who want to enter the profession and regularly mentors many students outside of the classroom to help them see and create spaces of change.
Misri first joined Journalism at The Creative School as a sessional instructor in 2014, and has taught from first year to grad studies. In her recent role as Limited Term Assistant Professor in 2022-23, Misri embodied an interdisciplinary spirit, collaborating across The Creative School to launch the Soup Salon which explores creativity in new and innovative ways. Her emerging research on Artificial Intelligence in newsrooms was shared at national and international journalism and AI conferences in 2023 and her work organizing Newsroom Notes will appear in the peer reviewed journal Facts and Frictions this fall.
No stranger to publishing, Misri has an M.A. in Journalism from Western University and is an award-winning novelist. In addition to written and digital work, Misri has been active in the podcast space since its inception and is a regular contributor to CBC Radio panels.
Misri is foremost student-centric. Excited by the prospect of sharing her passion with future generations of storytellers, she is eager to take a leadership role in our masthead, On The Record, the School’s working newsroom. As a former colleague of hers said, “she sees the future before the rest of us,” and as another remarked “she has the rare mix of high level technical skills and editorial experience” to make a serious impact on the field. We are very excited to see the new ideas and energy she’ll bring to the School.
