The School of Journalism is pleased to announce that The Joe Schlesinger Memorial Award has reached its fundraising goal of $25,000. The award, created in 2020, will now live on in perpetuity at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).

The Joe Schlesinger Memorial Award honours Schlesinger's legacy by recognizing a Canadian journalism student at TMU who has shown a demonstrated interest in international journalism.

Schlesinger is known as one of Canada’s most respected and beloved journalists. During his time with CBC, he spent decades at home and abroad, covering war zones and global events that shaped history. He died in 2019 (external link)  at age 90.

As the 2022 recipient of the Joe Schlesinger Memorial Award in Journalism, I continue to be grateful for the support this award has given me.

After receiving this award, I have felt at ease with my finances as I dive deeper into journalism. It truly allows the recipient to focus on what matters most and take advantage of the education offered at the School of Journalism.

It is excellent news that its funding goal has been reached, and Schlesinger’s legacy will continue. I am excited about the opportunities future recipients will experience because of this award.
