Review of Journalism nominated for multiple COPAs
Multiple students and faculty have been nominated for their work in The Review of Journalism (external link) in this year’s Canadian Online Publishing Awards (external link) (COPA).
The Pull Quotes (external link) podcast is a finalist for the Best Podcast (Academic) category, with students Gabe Oatley as podcast editor, Rahaf Farawi as podcast producer, Andrew Oliphant and Annika Forman as guest producers, Geena Mortfield as fact checker. Staff included in the nomination are Angela Glover, as audio support, Lindsay Hanna as web support and Sonya Fatah as executive producer.
“One of the really beautiful things about Pull Quotes was it really was a team of stars helping to pull this podcast together, it was all of our efforts that helped make this happen,” says Oatley, MJ ‘22 and reporter, Future of Good (external link) .
Annika Forman, a current MJ student, was a guest producer on the podcast and a copy editor for the magazine. She says she was impressed with the collaborative teamwork. Her favourite episode was about the silver linings of virtual learning (external link) .
Farawi has been nominated for her story CBC’s Palestine Exception (external link) in two categories, Best Investigative Article (Consumer) and Best Multicultural Story (Academic). The in-depth feature, guided by instructor Shenaz Kermalli and Fatah, began as a broader focus on Palestinian news coverage. The final, nominated story is a “behind-the-scene accounts from current and former CBC staff (that) raise concerns about transparency, bias, and fear when pitching about the region,” according to The Review of Journalism (external link) .
Fatah says she is happy Farawi and the story have been nominated. “The recognition helps to validate the value and importance of the story,” she said. “Publishing a piece like this was complicated to begin with but to see others recognize it in a climate where there is some resistance to the critique the story offers, is meaningful.” Fatah added that she thinks it also reflects “a shift in composition in judging, which is great.”
The Review is also a finalist for the Best Web Site (Academic) category, with Jenna Benchetrit as managing editor online, Devon Harvey as production editor online, Ilesha K. Aulakh as senior editor online, Lindsay Hanna as web support and Sonya Fatah as supervising faculty member.
