I like to say that I started my journalism career at The Toronto Sun in the 80s. I was probably around 10-years-old, but I submitted a poem and a book report -- and they were both published in the teen page of the comics section!
Fast-forward to the 90s at the University of Toronto, I wrote for The Varsity and was the associate news editor. My very first published piece there was about advertisements in bathroom stalls. The entire piece was re-written by my editor! My first in-person interview that I can remember was with Dr. Henry Morgentaler. What a trip!
Then I was part of the pioneering digital team at globeandmail.com from 1999-2006, introducing breaking news to the site for the first time ever, then covering memorable events like 9-11 and the death of Pope John Paul II. I worked at the newspaper as well, writing, editing and laying out pages -- in every section except sports!
At 680 NEWS, I was the first digital editor and now at CityNews I'm a manager of a team of digital journalists.
I bring these 21 years of news experience into the classroom (virtual this year!) every week. I teach students real-world skills such as live reporting and interviewing. Students often say it's the most fun and practical course they are taking
My team at 680 NEWS and CityNews have won various awards in digital categories from the RTDNA, the Murrows and COPAs.
