Speaker Bio
Joy Luk is the first and the only blind Solicitor in Hong Kong. She holds an LLM in Human Rights from the University of Hong Kong and is an accredited mediator. She is a tireless advocate for disability justice and previously worked as an Investigation Officer at the statutory body of the Equal Opportunity Commission of Hong Kong. She is currently a guest lecturer with the School of Disability Studies, X University.
During the 2019/2020 protest movement in Hong Kong, Joy was always present at the frontlines of numerous protest actions. She was standing with a bullhorn between the protesters and the police, providing prompt legal assistance to those arrested as well as serving as a mediator to manage the emotion of both sides. She was targeted and harassed by the police from late 2019 until now.
She will share her experiences as a pro-democracy activist from the perspective of a totally blind human rights advocate.
