We’ve saved the best for last; this week we’re talking about the Faculty of Science and all the exciting opportunities that await you here! With programs in departments including Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry & Biology, the Faculty of Science opens a wide horizon of possibilities for you. You are offered co-op programs and dedicated scholarships, along with research opportunities and science fairs, so you can have a wide array of experiences before you graduate!

I spoke to international students and learned their favorite aspcts of the Faculty of Science:

1) Outreach at the SciXchange Program

The SciXchange Program aims to increase science literacy and support budding scientists from equity-deserving groups. With a focus on all STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) disciplines, the program organises exciting events and fairs where you can promote education and career awareness in science for children and high school students. They hire full-time and part-time students during the year, along with volunteers, so you can get involved and share your knowledge with others!

“At the Faculty of Science, I’m able to engage with emerging initiatives at the university. I’m part of SciXchange, a centre that showcases and supports the talents of minority groups within the Faculty of Science, and the Race Forward Program – a mentorship program that pairs Black students with Black-identifying mentors.”

2) Learn to be an entrepreneur in the Science Discovery Zone

Have you ever considered pitching a business idea or scientific discovery to investors? You can do that and more at the Science Discovery Zone! Part of the 10 entrepreneurial zones on campus, this zone helps innovative startups hit the ground running with their ideas across all science disciplines. The incubator offers three hubs so you can get involved in any way you’d like.

  • Explore: The first step is to get your foot inside the room. Here, you can learn about scientific entrepreneurship and build skills that will help you stand out as an innovator in your career. If you’re unsure about where to start but still explore unique opportunities, you can get started at the Explore hub by becoming a member (external link) .
  • Discover: If you think your idea is ready for take off, the Discovery hub is your launching pad! This is where you can get help with next steps on your entrepreneurial journey and learn how to polish your idea and give it a strong foundation. Turn your ideas into reality
  • Create: If you think you’re ready to go with your business idea, the Create hub will give you the resources and expertise needed to help you achieve your goals. With both technical support in your scientific endeavors and business development guidance, the Create hub will be the stepping stone you need for the final big step!

3. Inspire at Science Rendezvous

Imagine setting up your own interactive science booth on campus for more than a thousand participants! Science Rendezvous is an annual fair held every summer on campus which houses interactive learning experiences for participants of all ages. In 2024, 21 booths and activities took over Gould Street on campus, ranging from Fun with Physics, Place the Planets, and Virtual Reality! Whether you want to set up your own booth to share your passion for science or contribute or dedicate your time to the exciting festivities all over campus as a volunteer, Science Rendezvous is the perfect summer event for you!

Kashish S. from Biomedical Science shares how these extra perks in the Faculty of Science have helped her gain important skills and explore multiple career pathways before she graduates this year.

"I’ve had the opportunity to study Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Infection & Immunity, Neurobiology, and Biotechnology, each of which provided hands-on projects that enhanced my research, analytical, and problem-solving skills. My experience as a Pocket Scientist at Science Rendezvous reinforced my passion for science communication and outreach. Engaging with a diverse audience, simplifying STEM concepts, and inspiring young students to explore science was incredibly rewarding!"

The Faculty of Science helps you combine your passion for science with career development skills. The possibilities are endless!
