5 of my favourite things about the English Language Institute

I'm Sadra, a third-year Computer Science student. I started my TMU journey with the English Language Institute (ELI).

I joined the ELI in the Fall of 2022 when I completed my ESL Foundations 1 Term before starting my undergraduate program in Computer Science in the Winter of 2023. Now, as an International Peer Supporter, I spend lots of time at the ELI, helping students navigate their journey here. It is more than just a place to study; I love spending my time in this place because of its welcoming and supportive environment.

The ELI at Toronto Metropolitan University is a great place to support international students transitioning to their undergraduate studies. The ELI provides a great opportunity for students to practice their English while participating in events where we get to explore the city and immerse ourselves in a busy student culture. It also provides students with the language skills, academic preparation, and community connections needed for success.

Here are five of my favourite things about the ELI that make it such a special place for students like me.

1. Cultural & Social Events

One thing that I like about the ELI is the variety of activities and events that we have. We have exploration events such as going to the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto Islands, Canada’s Wonderland, and many more. We also organize different cultural events to recognize holidays celebrated by our students who are coming from around the world. There’s always something exciting happening here, and what I love about the events is that while having fun, people can practice their English without the pressure of judgment. When I was a student here, these events helped me make new friends from different parts of the world and feel connected to my community.

2. The Classroom

The classrooms at the English Language Institute are another thing that I like since they are designed to be interactive and flexible. All the classrooms have movable tables, bright natural lighting, and classroom cameras, which create an engaging learning space. I love the way we get to practice our English with interactive activities and group discussions in the classroom. The classrooms are also used for workshops and student-led activities beyond our ESL classes. When I was an ELI Student, they had workshops about how to find a job in Toronto, how to write a resume, how to manage time, and many more, which helped me grow as an international student in Toronto. Now, I host workshops like these to help the current ELI students.

3. The People

One of the most valuable things about the ELI is the people. The students, instructors, and peer supporters create a welcoming environment where you can always ask questions and they can help you. Whether it is an academic or personal question, they can guide you. The instructors helped me build confidence in my English skills. Peer supporters made sure I felt comfortable transitioning to my undergraduate program. Being part of this diverse community has been one of my favourite experiences at TMU.

4. The Lobby

The ELI lobby is one of my favourite places; I love to spend my time in it. The lobby has comfortable seating, high tables, and a microwave that is a perfect spot to have lunch. I regularly chat with people there and even meet new students. Whether I am doing some school work, chatting with people from different backgrounds, or just chilling out, the ELI lobby is the perfect spot for me.

5. The Location

The last thing that I like about the ELI is the location. It is located just two blocks from Yonge and Dundas, making the ELI an ideal spot right in the heart of downtown Toronto! It is connected to the College subway station, which makes it easy for me to commute, and there are plenty of food options nearby. The location is also very close to one of TMU’s recreation centres, the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC). This helped me to easily stay active after my class time.

The English Language Institute is more than just a place to study; it is a community that supports students both academically and socially. Whether you're enjoying the welcoming environment in the lobby, attending fun events or learning in the classrooms, the ELI is a place where international students truly feel at home.
