What made you choose TMU?
Coming from a quiet little island, I was really excited to explore and venture out. TMU quickly became my first choice because I loved that the campus is in the downtown core so we’re exposed to the hustle and bustle of city life which is really fun.
What stood out to you most about studying in your program at the Faculty of Community Services?
That we can complete two placement opportunities while studying. Hands-on experience with youth allowed me to expand my knowledge and passion for my program. Learning in the classroom is one thing, but implementing my knowledge in real life makes all the difference.
Did you have a memorable experiential learning opportunity as part of the Faculty of Community Services?
My entire internship opportunity; I have learned more at my placement than I have in the classroom. This year I'm completing my fourth-year placement and working at a shelter. It is completely different than anywhere I have worked before, but I love it; each day is completely different. It is exposing me to a whole new side of Child and Youth Care.
What events did you participate in at TMU?
I was involved in the Faculty of Community Services Society (FCSS) orientation where I got the opportunity to help run events for incoming students. I attended many of the events and connected with new students, made friends, and answered their questions about student life and gave them advice.
What advice do you have for your first-year self, about to begin studying at TMU?
Take a moment to understand your needs, goals and interests, and align your involvement in student groups accordingly. Be bold and seek help when necessary and connect with your peers from different faculties and expand your horizons. Embracing these principles will make your first year at TMU fulfilling and successful.
At the end of my conversation with Emily, I asked her which student services on campus had been the most helpful to her. Her top picks were:
International Student Support: ISS works to support international students through their transition to life in Canada and help them navigate their new environment, systems and culture. With informative workshops and immigration advising, they are known to be the one stop shop for everything international students may need throughout their time at TMU.
Shift Wellness Centre: TMSU’s calming centre for wellbeing, the Shift Wellness Centre offers a calming space for students to collaborate and helps students navigate accessibility services.
Through exciting work opportunities and the support she has received at TMU, Emily has made the most out of her undergraduate journey. Learn about the different kinds of programs offered in the Faculty of Community Services, and the experiential learning components in each!
