Let’s Ask International Students: Academic Challenges and Wins

When I joined TMU as a first-year international student, I knew a lot of things would need getting used to. The culture shock extended to both academics and the social and cultural environment. The way the curriculum was structured, the grading system, the expectations set on university students–it was all new to me. I remember feeling overwhelmed during syllabus week, unsure if I would be able to handle this change in environment on top of first-time university jitters. Two years later, it’s safe to say that not only did I emerge unhurt contrary to what I had thought, I also started to enjoy my classes and revel in the challenging aspect of it all. It made me push myself out of my comfort zone and uncover the academic within me who loves to expand her knowledge and perform well in tests and assignments.

What helped me overcome this daunting new structure was accessing TMU resources on campus, many of which are specifically designed to help new students ease into university life. The learning workshops offered by Student Life and Learning Support helped me navigate the writing process for academic papers. The library Research Help services supported me when it came to technical aspects such as citations and references which I was used to doing in a completely different way. For courses that I initially found challenging in my program, I would attend tutoring sessions in the Program Advising and Student Success (PASS) Office at TRSM where upper-year students helped me prepare for tests and understand concepts I was unfamiliar with.

Academic journeys on campus can differ across faculties. To learn more about other international students’ journeys, I spoke to some of my friends about their academic experiences, challenges and wins!

What surprised you when you first came to TMU?

When starting your academic journey in a new country, a lot of things can catch you by surprise.

🇲🇽 Rebeka S. (Business Technology Management, Class of 2026):

“One thing I didn't fully appreciate about my program at TMU until I started my studies was the incredible level of support and mentorship available. The faculty's commitment to student success and the various resources, like Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) and program advisors, have been a pleasant surprise, making my academic journey even more enriching and manageable.”

🇧🇸 Emily T. (Child & Youth Care, Class of 2024)

“Throughout my 5 years at TMU, I have discovered various services. Some that have helped me are the International Student Support office, in terms of getting advice about my student visa, working, etc. The Student Centre (external link)  building as a whole has also been extremely useful, from the Good Food Centre (external link)  to the SHIFT wellness centre.

🇵🇰 Fatima A. (Chemical Engineering, Class of 2025)

“I was surprised by how welcoming and inclusive everyone was; I did not feel too much of a culture shock. Because I started in 2020, I was not able to do any campus visits and my interactions with people at the university were limited, so I was unsure what to expect upon returning to an in-person environment, but I was pleasantly surprised.”

🇵🇪 Micaela P. (International Economics and Finance, Class of 2025)

“How close everything is! The subway, the mall, grocery stores, the stadium, even Lake Ontario—it's all just a short walk away. There’s always something to do, and it makes it super easy to stay entertained between classes.”

🇪🇬 Omar M. (Politics & Governance, Class of 2028)

“I was surprised at how the campus is always busy around coffee corners. Back home, I used to always hang out at a cafe just like I do around Balzac’s now. I thought it’s just a me thing, always being around coffee shops for hours and days; however, I ended up making all my new friends there!”

What has been the biggest challenge in your academic journey?

A rich and exciting academic journey is not without its challenges. But with academic services and student support, TMU has a lot of resources to offer that helps students navigate them effectively.

🇲🇽 Rebeka S. (Business Technology Management, Class of 2026)

“Transitioning from high school to university in a new country is a challenging but exciting shift.. Building a support system and utilizing available resources are key to a successful transition.”

🇪🇬 Omar M. (Politics & Governance, Class of 2028)

“I always want to discover new places around the city but my schedule is busy. When I have some time, I would love to explore but for now, my favorite spot is Dineen Coffee.”

🇵🇰 Fatima A. (Chemical Engineering, Class of 2025)

“Balancing my engineering coursework, leadership activities and other activities is overwhelming at times, but I have learned to set boundaries and seek support when I need it. I have acquired skills like time management and communication as a result of this.”

🇵🇪 Micaela P. (International Economics and Finance, Class of 2025)

“The biggest challenge I faced was the transition from high school math to application-based math in university. It wasn’t just about understanding the formulas anymore but applying concepts to real-world scenarios. At first, it was overwhelming, but with the support of the Math Support Group, I built confidence and strengthened my skills, allowing me to perform well in my courses.”

What is an achievement that makes you feel proud of yourself in this journey?

The harder the challenges, the more rewarding it is to be able to overcome them. The meaning of success is different for each student, unique to their experiences and background.

🇵🇪 Micaela P. (International Economics and Finance, Class of 2025)

“Starting the first women’s finance club (external link)  at TMU earlier this year is something I’m really proud of. Ever since I started considering a career in finance, I always thought it would be great to have a club where women who want to pursue a career in finance could come together and support each other. Seeing that idea turn into a reality has been an amazing experience.”

🇪🇬 Omar M. (Politics & Governance, Class of 2028)

“Being an International Student Ambassador, which is a Career Boost position I have taken up this semester! I feel very validated with my work. The team is very supportive of one another, enhancing my experience as a first-year TMU student and easing my stress of being a newbie.”

🇵🇰 Fatima A. (Chemical Engineering, Class of 2025)

“Last year, after my summer co-op term, I presented my research at an academic conference in Calgary. This was significant because I get stage fright, but I pushed myself and worked hard to prepare for the presentation, focusing on the content and practicing public speaking. Ultimately, I presented confidently and learned that stepping out of my comfort zone leads to personal growth.”

🇲🇽 Rebeka S. (Business Technology Management, Class of 2026)

“Being involved in my program! I maintained a position in the top 10 percent most involved students last year, which is a source of pride for me. I also held one of the highest numbers of TedPoints! Moreover, I was featured in the year-end video for Fit for Business which was a unique opportunity. I like that TRSM offers such innovative ways to encourage student engagement, leadership and extracurricular involvement.”

To see what the future holds for these international students, we will be back soon with a piece about looking to the future in TMU in the third (and final) part of this series!
