How I stay healthy over the summer

When I first arrived at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), I was bracing myself for heavy winters and gloomy weather. However, I quickly learned that the summer months in Toronto are actually transformative and very vibrant. As an international student, being far from home and adapting to a new environment can be challenging, but focusing on health and wellness helps me stay grounded and connected. My name is Safia, I’m an international student from Egypt, and here’s how I stay healthy and active during the summer at TMU, along with some resources the university offers to help you do the same.

I embrace the outdoors

One of the best parts about summer in Toronto is the abundance of outdoor activities. I take full advantage of the longer days by incorporating outdoor workouts into my routine. Running or biking along the waterfront trails, hiking in the nearby parks, or even just taking a stroll around TMU’s campus helps me stay active and enjoy the sunny weather.

I utilize the TMU fitness and recreation centre

TMU’s Recreation and Athletic Centre (RAC) is a fantastic space. Even in the summer, the gym and pool are open and less crowded. I often use the fitness classes offered, such as yoga and Pilates, which are perfect for both physical and mental health. The RAC also has excellent facilities for sports like basketball and squash, which are great for keeping fit while having fun with friends.

I choose healthy eating options

Eating healthy is another important aspect of maintaining wellness. TMU offers a variety of healthy dining options on campus. The Oakham Café, for instance, has a range of nutritious meals and snacks. I’ve also found the farmers' markets around Toronto to be a great source of fresh produce. Cooking my own meals with these fresh ingredients not only ensures I eat healthily but also saves money.

I prioritize mental health and wellbeing

Maintaining mental health is as important as physical health, especially during the busy summer months. TMU’s Centre for Student Development and Counselling (CSDC) offers a range of services, including one-on-one counselling and group workshops. These resources have been invaluable in managing stress and staying mentally balanced. Additionally, I practice mindfulness and meditation regularly, which has been greatly beneficial for my overall well-being.

I stay hydrated

It might sound simple, but staying hydrated is essential, especially during the hot summer days. I always carry a water bottle with me and take advantage of the water refill stations around campus. Keeping hydrated helps me maintain my energy levels and overall health.

I explore Toronto

Lastly, exploring the city of Toronto itself is a great way to stay active and engaged. From the beaches at Toronto Islands to the cultural festivals happening throughout the city, there’s always something to do. This not only helps in staying physically active but also enriches my experience as an international student, allowing me to learn more about the local culture and make new friends.

Summer at TMU offers a unique opportunity to balance work, study, and wellness. With the right approach and resources, staying healthy and active can be enjoyable and rewarding. Whether you’re taking advantage of the RAC facilities, exploring outdoor activities, or utilizing mental health resources, TMU provides ample support to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. So, take the time to enjoy the summer, stay healthy, and make the most of your experience at TMU!
