My experience receiving two scholarships at TMU

Hi! I’m Cheryl, a third-year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Business Management with a focus on Economics and Management Science.  I am delighted to share my scholarship journey at TMU, highlighting the George Wong Scholarship and the Chan & Pang Family International Student Award.

I am lucky enough to have received both of the awards in Fall 2023, as a current TMU student. Apart from entrance scholarships to TMU, you can also view the many different awards and scholarships available to current students on AwardSpring (external link, opens in new window) . Some awards are academics-based and some are awarded based on your community involvement. Both awards I have received so far have been community-related, and I heard about them through emails and TMU social media channels. There are also awards and scholarships available that do not require applications, but rely solely on your grades.

Join me as I recount my experiences, challenges, and the impact these scholarships have had on my academic and personal growth.

George Wong Scholarship

The George Wong Scholarship immediately caught my attention due to its recognition of students who demonstrate excellence in leadership abilities and contribute to the quality of student life. As someone passionate about making a positive impact and fostering a vibrant student community, this scholarship aligned perfectly with my goals and aspirations.

Chan & Pang Family International Student Award

The Chan & Pang Family International Student Award, created by Rebecca Pang in 2023, aims to provide financial support for international students of Asian descent enrolled in the Ted Rogers School of Management. This scholarship focuses on students who demonstrate community involvement. As an international student of Asian descent myself, I felt a deep connection to this award and its emphasis on diversity and community engagement.

Before applying for these scholarships, I encountered doubts and fears. I questioned my qualifications and worried about the competitiveness of the selection process. However, I realized that the only way to know for sure was to take a leap of faith and apply! I overcame these fears by channelling my determination and focusing on my unique experiences and contributions.

The AwardSpring Portal (external link)  provided a user-friendly platform for scholarship applications. With the help of the portal, I explored various scholarships offered by TMU, reviewed the eligibility criteria, and submitted my applications electronically. The guidance and support provided by the portal ensured a smooth and efficient application process. AwardSpring is where TMU applicants and current students can go in order to find all available scholarships.

When I received the news that I had been selected as a recipient of both the George Wong Scholarship and the Chan & Pang Family International Student Award, I was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. These scholarships not only provided financial assistance but also served as recognition of my leadership abilities, community involvement, and cultural background. The support and validation inspired me to continue making a positive impact on campus and beyond.

My advice to you:

1. Believe in yourself and your abilities. Do not let self-doubt discourage you from applying.

2. Take the time to understand each scholarship's requirements and align them with your goals and passions. Tailor your application to showcase your unique qualities, experiences, and contributions.

3. Be authentic and genuine in your application! Let your passion and dedication shine through your words and experiences.

When preparing your scholarship application, make sure to emphasize your unique experiences, such as leadership roles, community involvement, and academic achievements. Highlight how your experiences align with the scholarship's objectives and demonstrate your commitment to making a difference. Additionally, articulate your financial need and how receiving the scholarship would support your academic journey and contribute to the TMU community.

Receiving the George Wong Scholarship and the Chan & Pang Family International Student Award has been a tremendous honour and a catalyst for my personal and academic growth at TMU. These scholarships have provided financial assistance, validation of my efforts, and opportunities to engage with diverse communities on campus. TMU's commitment to recognizing and supporting students' unique journeys has empowered me to embrace my cultural heritage, pursue my goals with confidence, and contribute meaningfully to the TMU community.

I encourage every one of you to explore the TMU scholarship opportunities available. Embrace the chance to make a difference, showcase your unique qualities, and let your story shine through your scholarship application. TMU is committed to nurturing your potential and supporting your dreams. Best of luck with your scholarship applications!
