Reflecting on my last four years

“In no time, you will be graduating, and it will be the most rewarding experience.” This is what my mom said to me on my first day of classes when I was nervous and had no clue what to expect as a first-year international student. A few months ago, when I crossed the stage during my convocation, this quote replayed in my mind and, indeed, I felt fulfilled.

Looking back at my undergraduate journey, I’m grateful for all the opportunities that came my way. Whether it was working part-time, volunteering, or socializing with my friends, everything contributed to a successful four years at Toronto Metropolitan University.

My decision to move from India to Canada at the age of 17 was the best one I could’ve made. It shaped me into an independent, responsible, and resilient person. I've learnt to accept challenges and take risks and try new things. When I first moved to Toronto, I was nervous about venturing out and making new friends, adapting to a new culture, and navigating through situations on my own.

Although adjusting to a new country did not happen instantaneously for me, I eventually managed to have a routine, explore the city and socialize with friends! A huge part of why I was able to do this was thanks to the support I received  from on-campus housing. Living in residence and having roommates allowed me to easily open up and seek comfort as my roommates became my family away from home. From having breakfast together in the cafeteria to sharing a tub of ice cream while studying, we supported each other at every step of the way during our first year!

Some of the best memories from my journey at TMU have been celebrating my 18th birthday with my friends in residence, spending long hours studying for exams at the Student Learning Center (SLC), celebrating Diwali in Kerr Hall Quad with my friends, volunteering at Orientation, and even cooking ramen with my roommates!

Every year at TMU looked different in terms of meeting new people, trying new things, and learning about other cultures–all of which contributed to my positive experience here. Although there were times when I missed my family and hometown, TMU’s student life and Toronto’s hustle and bustle kept me going.

Looking back on my four years in university, I can proudly say that the opportunities at TMU and its environment exposed me to a lifetime of experiences and taught me incredibly valuable skills. As a recent graduate, my only advice to my fellow incoming students would be to not compare yourself and your journey to others. Your experiences and skills are unique and valuable, and you do not need to push yourself to do more to compete with someone else. Your only competition should be yourself.

Good luck and best wishes for your undergraduate journey!
