Maintaining your mental and physical wellbeing
My name is Hongyu Yan, people around me are used to calling me Riley. I’m an International Student from China, currently in my second year of Creative Industries at Toronto Metropolitan University.
Studying abroad for me has been a mix of emotions so far, and I believe a lot of international students feel the same way because of the different cultures, weather, and lifestyles.
As an international student, many people warn you about the stress of studying in another country due to the language barrier, challenges with making friends or feeling lonely away from family. This is why maintaining your mental and physical well-being is crucial for you while you study abroad.
Your mental health is impacted by your outlook and state, and it can impact your physical health as well. We've all dealt with mental health issues where we felt stuck and didn't know what to do. When I feel particularly stressed, I will choose to treat myself well. This can be whatever works for you; taking a break from your studies or work, talking to someone, calming yourself down and seeking support. If you’re lucky enough, find a good friend or loved one to hug! Hugging is the best way to reduce stress.
Make time to go to your favourite place. For me, this is nature, especially a lake or near the sea. I will sit quietly and watch the tides, because I believe that the power of nature is infinite, and our problems are very small in front of nature. I will take a deep breath along with the sound of the waves, once, twice, three times, until my anxiety and troubles are calmed down.
Maintaining your physical health is also extremely important. Exercising can not only improve your immune system but it will also make you feel energetic and benefit your mental health. Sometimes, you may be strapped for time regarding exercise, especially during this busy exam season. Try to stand up and move around for half an hour after a long time of sitting down to study or work. Get out in nature, put your phone down and look out your window.
Finally, make use of TMU’s mental and physical wellbeing services offered to you. Student Wellbeing offers counselling, academic accommodation, and various campus resources for TMU students in need of support. At the Recreation & Athletic Centre (RAC) and the MAC Fitness Centre, you can conveniently exercise for free near campus; from yoga and group fitness classes to swimming!
Maintaining your mental and physical health in today’s busy and stressful world can be tough! Remember, when your physical and mental health are taken care of and prioritized you can be your best self and do well in school and at work. When you’re under pressure, please care about yourself and love yourself.
