The world has problems, and you can solve them.
Hack the World teaches students how to understand and solve some of the world's most pressing problems. Broken up into three programs across one year, students will collaborate in multidisciplinary teams towards projects inspired by the latest world issues that will create real world impact.
Get funding, the skills needed to excel in future careers, a strong project to showcase in your resume, and an everlasting network that will help you grow and make a difference.

Hack the World is delivered by Innovation Boost Zone and with support from Science Discovery Zone (opens in new window) , Social Venture Zone (opens in new window) and Clean Energy Zone (opens in new window) — inspired by United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Fall 2024
Hackathon: Explore your idea and think of a solution
This is a 5 day hackathon where students will form teams, learn about Sustainable Development Goals and form an idea to a selected topic.
Prizes
- Each participant will be given $325 for program completion.
- Up to $4500 winner per team ($1500 each team member)
- Grand prize winners will be automatically considered for the next phase of Hack the World
Who can participate
- Anyone who is currently a TMU student.
- Participants must compete in teams of 3. You may apply with a pre-existing team, or apply solo and be matched with a team.
Significant Dates
- Hackathon deadline to apply: October 31st, 2024 @11PM
- Hackathon Dates: November 18 to 22, 2024

Winter 2024
Develop: Analyze and design your project
A 7-week program from February 2025 to April 2025 where three student teams with the strongest ideas will receive additional funding to continue developing their idea with the support of a community partner.
Prizes
- Teams of 3 will be paid $6,000 ($2,000 per team member).
- Grand prize winners will have the opportunity to apply for the Summer experiential program in May-August 2025.
Who can participate
- Anyone who is currently a TMU student.
- Participants must compete in teams of 3.
Applications are due February 20, 2 PM.

Summer 2025
Launch: Grow your idea and create impact
The top student team with the strongest idea will be given salaries to work full time during May to August 2025 to launch their idea in the real world.
Prizes
- All three participants receive approximately $12,000
- Teams will receive up to $26000 of additional proof of concept funds to take their innovation from prototype to the real world
Who can participate
- Winners of the Hack The World Build Program are the exclusive participants of the summer Hack the World challenge
