Join us on Thursday, November 7, 2024, for a round dance honouring our veterans. The Round Dance is a traditional Indigenous ceremony that brings communities together to heal, honor, and celebrate. Hosted in collaboration with local partners, it features drumming, singing, and dancing, and is open to all.

What to expect

The event will begin at 4 p.m. and run until 9:30 p.m. Attendees will join hands in a circle around singers, participate in ceremonial and social songs, enjoy a traditional feast, and witness a giveaway that honors the spirit of the event. All are welcome to participate in this inclusive cultural experience.

Participants can expect to learn about Indigenous traditions and teachings through the experience of the Round Dance, which fosters connection and unity. A memorial will take place for those children who have been found at residential schools and for those who have been intergenerational impacted by residential school and have now passed on to the spirit world. Bring a picture of a loved one who has passed on for the memorial song. There will be opportunities to engage with Elders and cultural knowledge carriers, deepening understanding of the significance of the ceremony and social gathering.

This event is part of Indigenous Education and Treaties Recognition Week at TMU

From November 4 to 8, Indigenous Education and Treaties Recognition Week will take place across the TMU campus, featuring educational panels, hands-on workshops, entertaining events and more. TMU students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to participate in programming to better understand the unique and diverse experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, as well as treaty rights, treaty relationships and their relevance today. Indigenous Education and Treaties Recognition Week is just one facet of the larger work towards reconciliation, for which we are all responsible.

This week’s events are organized by Crystal Osawamick, Manager, Indigenous Events and Special Projects, and Cher Trudeau, Administrative Coordinator, Indigenous Education Council and Indigenous Initiatives, Office of the Vice-President Equity and Community Inclusion (OVPECI).
