Amidst the myriad of demands faced by graduate students, finding time to slow down can be a challenge. Yet, the chance to indulge in plant crafting proved simply irresistible at the popular GRAD Art Break: Succulent shadow box crafting event. Graduate students and alumni came together to create hanging succulent wall art, to be proudly displayed in their work spaces or homes.

The vibrant and inclusive ambiance naturally facilitated connections among students from various programs, fostering a sense of community. The act of creating art also served as a form of self-care, enabling participants to reflect on their academic journeys together. In the midst of the whirlwind of graduate life, the event provided a moment of pause for students to unwind and find solace in creativity.

Participants were appreciative of the therapeutic atmosphere and the opportunity to mingle with peers from diverse faculties. Katrin Faridani, an alumna of the Documentary Media MFA program, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the event's significance in fostering connections beyond graduation:

"After graduating, it's easy to feel isolated, but attending GRAD Art Break made reconnecting with others so natural and enjoyable. Crafting alongside peers from different programs who shared an open and curious mindset shows the beauty of such gatherings. We unite with others who share common ground, and the act of creating something tangible with our hands brings a profound sense of satisfaction, something we hope to cherish for months to come."

Additional GRAD Art Break sessions are planned for the summer and will be announced via Grad+Postdoc News and social media.

“Events like this are important to keep a sense of connection and belonging for students and alumni,” said Faridani. “TMU holds a special place in our hearts, and it’s nice to know the feeling is mutual.”
