New Gmail Inbox Option - Tabs
Releasing On: June 11, 2013
Gmail is getting a brand new inbox option, available to its users, on desktop and mobile that puts you back in control using simple, easy organization. As a user, you can organize different types of email, e.g. messages from friends, social notifications, deals and offers, confirmations and receipts and more.
This new Gmail Inbox option helps you classify your messages into several categories that appear as different tabs. You can select which categories you want to customize your Inbox. This way you can decide which emails you want to read and when.
You can easily customize the new inbox - select the tabs you want from all five to none, drag-and-drop to move messages between tabs, set certain senders to always appear in a particular tab and star messages so that they also appear in the Primary tab.
For the mobile version please check Gmail for Android 4.0 (external link) + and Gmail for iPhone and iPad (external link) apps. After installation, you'll see your Primary mail when you open the app and you can easily navigate to the other tabs.
How to Customize the Tabs
If you want to customize the tabs, follow these steps:
- Click the small wheel (cog) icon in the upper-right hand corner
- Choose Configure inbox as shown below:
- From the screen 'Select tabs to enable' (shown below), press the tabs you would like to appear/disappear from your inbox and press Save when done
How to Turn the Tabs Feature Off
In order to turn the Tabs feature off and switch back to the classic view:
- Click on the + sign beside the Tabs which are now showing on top of your emails
- You will get the 'Select tabs to enable' screen. Remove all the check marks. You will not be able to remove Primary tab since that is your main Inbox tab. This will ensure that the tabs will not show anymore and you will be switched back to the classic view.
