Annette Bailey appointed associate dean of graduate studies and internationalization for the Faculty of Community Services

Annette Bailey was appointed as the new associate dean of graduate studies and internationalization for the Faculty of Community Services (FCS) in  August 2022.    

The associate dean, graduate studies and internationalization will provide strategic leadership in graduate education in the areas of student engagement, curriculum, community initiatives, and faculty development in research and teaching. The associate dean will also design an internationalization strategy that centres considerations of equity and social justice across all initiatives, including international student recruitment, global partnerships, study abroad programs and more.

Annette Bailey is an associate professor with the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing. Her research is focused on gun violence prevention and survivorship. Bailey has collaborated with researchers and advocates in several countries to establish policy recommendations for gun violence survivors, and has shared these policy recommendations in the House of Commons. She is involved in several initiatives to advance the work of organizations supporting victims/survivors of violence at the local and national level. For this work, she was honoured with the 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women Award in 2018.

Over the past 11 years, Bailey has contributed to service across all aspects of the university, including the Academic Standards Committee, Senate, FCS Mentorship Circle, Departmental Hiring and Evaluation Committees, Student Award Committees and several equity committees. She is currently co-leading the Faculty Working Group of the Presidential Implementation Committee to Confront Anti-Black Racism. She is providing leadership in the development of a Black Studies Institute, post-doctoral fellowships for Black scholars and a career mentorship program for Black graduate students.

From 2016-2019, Bailey served as the associate director of the Collaborative Undergraduate Nursing Program. Among her achievements as associate director, she led a major modification of the four-year collaborative curriculum across three highly engaged partnering sites. She was honoured with the Dean’s Service Award in 2019.

Bailey has supported the development of students both inside and outside of the classroom through the use of critical pedagogies, scholarly mentorship, and intellectual partnerships. She is currently involved in the Volunteer Research Assistant Training Program, a program developed by nursing faculty members to build the research capacity of students. She has supported and supervised students at the master’s and PhD levels across three universities. In 2021, Bailey received the OCUFA Teaching Award for outstanding contributions to higher education.
