Reminder re Workload Form
To: RFA Faculty Members and CUPE Local 3904, Unit 1 Contract Lecturers
The CUPE 3904 Unit 3 Collective Agreement requires that Supervising Instructors (SIs) provide a breakdown of the expected number of hours of work for TA/GA appointments. This is attached to the offer of appointment and then reviewed with the TA/GA during the initial meeting between the SI and the TA/GA. A (google doc) sample of the workload form (external link) is available on the Faculty Affairs website.
The workload form should clearly state the expected number of hours assigned to each assigned duty. During the semester, the number of hours worked should be monitored by the SI and the TA/GA to ensure that it does not exceed the total number of hours for the appointment. Should there be an issue between the SI and the TA/GA about assigned duties or assigned hours, the two should meet and discuss in an attempt to find a resolution. Resolution can include adjusting the course deliverables, adjusting the hours or duties, or any other appropriate action that is determined by the SI, in consultation with the TA/GA.
The move to remote teaching necessitated by COVID-19 may impact the type of work required from TA/GAs. However, SIs are responsible for ensuring that the work assigned to TA/GAs is consistent with what would normally be expected of a TA/GA (marking, leading tutorials, office hours, etc.) as outlined in Article 12 of the CUPE Local 3904, Unit 3 Collective Agreement. The assigned duties should be clearly articulated on the workload form.
