Honouring the National Day of Mourning

April 26, 2024

The National Day of Mourning is held annually in Canada on April 28 and is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, suffered injury or illness on the job or a work-related tragedy. As April 28 falls on a Sunday this year, those on campus on April 29 will notice the university’s flag at half mast.

Every worker has the right to return home safe and sound at the end of each work day. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) (external link)  hopes that the observance of this day is taken not only as a day to remember the dead and injured, but also a day to strive to prevent workplace deaths, illnesses and injuries.

Toronto Metropolitan University is committed to promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of all community members and providing a safe and healthy work, learning, and research environment. As you pause to remember and honour those who have suffered a work-related tragedy, we encourage our community to learn about the resources we have in place at TMU to support healthy and safe work and learning environments by reviewing information on the Environmental Health and Safety website
