Azad written in Arabic, meaning independent and free.

Finding a safe space to be yourself can be challenging. It can be harder when you live at the intersection of two communities and if you feel the need to reconcile your own identity.

Positive Space Faculty and Staff Network and the Muslim Employee Community Network invite faculty and staff who identify as both 2SLGBTQ+* and Muslim to a private social event, Azad.

*We acknowledge that terms like 2SLGBTQ+ and what it means to be “out” are based on a particularly Western framework for situating the community. Many people use other terms and cultural frameworks, which we encourage. Our intention, as always, is inclusion.

What to expect

This event will offer a safe space to get to know your peers with a focus on connection, solidarity, affirmation, friendship, and no pressure. Whether you are out or keep your identity private, are religiously active or culturally identified, this space is for you. You don’t have to explain.

Come to meet new friends or enjoy a free halal, gluten-free and vegan-friendly lunch.

This is a judgment-free and photography-free event.

To respect the privacy of attendees, registration is required and is limited only to those who identify as both 2SLGBTQ+ and Muslim.

Register for location details

The event location on the TMU campus will be shared with registrants. Your registration data will be kept in the strictest confidence and shared only with six members of Positive Space Faculty and Staff Community Network and the Muslim Employee Community Network who are working on this event.
