Ryerson continues to reach out to the community to address the recent tragedy at the mosque in Quebec City, and the U.S. immigration regulations directed at Muslim citizens of seven Middle East and North African countries.

On February 27, the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, in collaboration with the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, invited you to join a discussion on how our community has been impacted by these events, and how we can work together to resolve the issue of Islamophobia.

Panellists will focus on various political and human rights aspects, the academic understanding of what is Islam and who are Muslims, and how we can support our Muslim colleagues at Ryerson (students, staff and faculty).

Moderator

  • Imam Yasin Dwyer | Muslim Chaplain, Ryerson University

Panellists

  • Haroon Siddiqui | Canadian Newspaper WHICH? Management Executive, Editor and Columnist; Ryerson Distinguished Visiting Professor, Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Communication & Design
  • Shafique Virani | Distinguished Professor of Islamic Studies, University of Toronto; Founding Director of the Centre for South Asian Civilizations; Past Chair of the Department of Historical Studies?
  • Jasmin Zine | Professor, Sociology and the Muslim Studies Option, Wilfrid Laurier University
  • Natasha Persaud | Employment and Human Rights Lawyer with Formative LLP; Adjunct Faculty, Osgoode Hall Law School, York University

At Ryerson University, we are redefining the learning experience by exploring bold ideas and transforming them into opportunities. Here, our students gain real-world experience and create the impact they want to see in the world. This event is part of the Mind and Action series sponsored by the Provost and Vice-President, Academic.

In addition to the Mind and Action event, Ryerson University has already hosted several related events for:

  • Muslim students on campus.
  • Ryerson faculty and staff who identify as Muslim.
  • Muslim community members and allies to share general feelings and to identify needed supports.
