Literature of Modernity Convocation 2017
On October 12, 2017, the Department of English celebrated the graduation of our 9th Literatures of Modernity MA cohort. Congratulations to our impressive group!
During our pre-convocation reception, awards were given to Kailey Havelock and Rebecca Martin (pictured above).
Kailey was recognized for her outstanding academic record: she achieved the remarkable feat of earing a perfect GPA, having received an A+ in every MA course. Following the completion of her degree, Kailey remains active in the literary field: “I am presently working as an agency assistant at CookeMcDermid, a literary agency. I also work as the copy editor for The Puritan and as a manuscript editor for one of Professor Irene Gammel’s very exciting forthcoming books. A PhD is somewhere on my horizon, but right now my focus is making a name for myself in the publishing industry. I’m planning to start Ryerson’s publishing certificate program in the evenings this winter.”
Rebecca won the award for Best Essay, entitled “‘Queering the ‘Lost Year’: Transcription and the Lesbian Continuum in Susan Choi’s American Woman.” Like Kailey, Rebecca has been keeping busy: “I’ve been hired as a proposal writer for a market research company in downtown Toronto. I’m currently working on an essay about letterpress and digital mark-up for the Yellow Nineties Online, which I will be presenting at the joint Research Society for Victorian Periodicals (RSVP) and the Victorian Studies Association of Western Canada (VSAWC) conference at the University of Victoria in July, 2018. I’ve also recently had some writing published in a children’s book; artist Gavin Aung Than used something I wrote for one of his comics, which can be found online here: https://zenpencils.com/comic/frida/ (external link) ). As for the future, I’ve been thinking about applying for a PhD next year, focusing on print culture and artists’ books.”
We wish all of our newly-minted MAs much success as they continue to pursue their personal and professional goals.
