A decade of impact: Farewell Dean Tom!
Beginning his teaching journey at Waterloo University, professor Thomas Duever has been educating and inspiring engineering students for thirty-five years. For the last decade, Duever has served as dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS) at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).
Passionate about making the fields of engineering and architectural science more accessible to equity-deserving groups, Duever was instrumental in launching FEAS programs and initiatives that provided new opportunities for faculty and students. During his tenure, he championed the development of the FEAS Teaching & Outreach office, which now delivers year-long STEM programming for youth. Working alongside staff, he also transformed the faculty’s internship offering into a unique and robust co-op and internship program, which provides hundreds of students paid placements with Canada’s top employers on an annual basis. Helmed by the FEAS Co-op & Internship Program office staff, the evolved program provides extensive training and counseling services to ensure students are prepared for life beyond the classroom.

From orientation to convocation, Dean Duever prioritized engaging with students throughout their journey.
As dean, Duever also sought to evolve FEAS’ academic offering, collaborating with faculty members to launch new programs, such as the undergraduate Mechatronics program in 2023. He also oversaw the evolution of graduate studies at the faculty, which now boasts twelve programs and numerous degree pathways. Recent milestones include expanding the industry-inspired Project Management in the Built Environment program and launching a PhD in Architecture in 2024 – the only architecture doctoral program in Canada focused on research through design.

Dean Duever always made a point to join in for the ceremonial “purpling” event, alongside students and staff.

During his final term, Duever held “Pizza with the Dean” lunches. Students flocked to the event each month to share pepperoni slices and stories with their dean.
Teaching has always been at the heart of what motivates Duever. “Engineering is problem-solving,” he said. “I always challenge our students to make an impact wherever their journey takes them. I believe our programs and co-op offering are suited to help them gain the skills, confidence, and experience they need to do that.” In recognition of his commitment to championing student success, the student-led Metropolitan Undergraduate Engineering Society (MUES) presented Duever with the Dean of the Decade award in 2024. Of the many accolades Duever has received during his teaching career, it’s the award he cherishes most.
On February 1st, FEAS professor and colleague, Sri Krishnan will begin his term as dean at the faculty. For the first time in a long time, Duever will have time to reflect on his journey and he welcomes the unknown, curious to see where it takes him next. As for transitioning to his sabbatical, Duever steps away with great pride and optimism. “Our students are tremendous and they have always reinvigorated me,” he said. “They make me incredibly hopeful for the future.”

In commemoration of Dean Duever’s passion for supporting students, the Metropolitan Undergraduate Engineering Society presented him with the Dean of the Decade award – along with one very stylish jacket Duever proudly wears.
