Amplying the voices of FEAS’s LGBTQ+ community

After enjoying the initiatives run by EngOut (external link) , TMU’s LGBTQ+ engineering body, throughout their first year, Wei (Drew) Yu wanted to give back to their community.
Despite having little extracurricular or leadership experience, the computer engineering student decided to take on the vice-president role of EngOut in their second year. After successfully planning initiatives and amplifying the voices of this marginalized community, Yu was named interim president of EngOut.
“By the end, I was inspired by the student leaders around me, and I felt that helping others in the queer engineering community was extremely rewarding,” said Yu.
Improving social engagement for the LGBTQ+ community within the engineering field and advancing the group's professional network with inclusive companies was Yu’s goal for EngOut. As interim president, Yu led several equity initiatives, including an EDI tech talk with Thomson Reuters and planning EngOut’s annual industry dinner, where companies across all engineering fields were invited to network. Yu also planned the group’s Toronto Pride march to demonstrate their commitment to equity and representation for TMU’s engineering body.
