Spotlight

Xavier Fernando knows how to motivate his graduate students. It comes down to building just the right amount of confidence, a practice Fernando has perfected since his youth. “When I was young, I had lots of ambitions and felt like I could make an impact,” he recalls. “I have a role to play in this world, and I will be happy if I can play my role.”

Fernando has certainly played his part in wireless communications and positioning. With the field becoming so intrinsic to human life, research in the field has reached critical heights. “Wireless communication will continue to be an integral part of modern civilization. It will never go away, because communication is so important. And it will become much more indispensable in our life. There’s no doubt about that.”

As our connectedness rises, so does the need to train highly qualified researchers in the field. For that, Fernando is up to the task. “I’m always thinking about how to make things better and how to teach somebody. That is my inner driving force.”
