Consultations

Five TMU community members sit around a table in the library as they discuss the EDI strategy and action plan. One student, dressed in a long-sleeved peach shirt with a laptop in front of her, smiles at another student across the table. Another student wearing glasses and a long-sleeved blue shirt holds a pen, smiling, as he listens to input from his peers.

Your input will shape the future of EDI at TMU

This project will be stronger with active participation from students, faculty and staff.

Launched in Fall 2024 at the request of President Mohamed Lachemi, the Office of the Vice-President, Equity and Community Inclusion (OVPECI) began leading the development of TMU’s first university-wide Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy and Action Plan, led by Vice-President Dr. Tanya (Toni) De Mello.

This strategy will define a shared vision and clear priorities to advance equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging across the university over the next five years.

Your insights are essential. An advisory committee of diverse voices is guiding the process, and a dedicated project team is leading campus-wide engagement, including community consultations, research and collaboration with university leadership.

Together, we will shape a plan grounded in community input, outline measurable progress and take meaningful action.

Engagement objectives

All TMU community members are invited to engage in the EDI Strategy and Action Plan process. Our engagement objectives are to:

  • foster institutional buy-in and commitment
  • gather and integrate stakeholder insights
  • enhance transparency, trust and understanding
  • assess institutional readiness and resource needs
  • create pathways for meaningful engagement and dialogue
  • strengthen relevance and positive impact

Community engagement opportunities

The development of the EDI Strategy and Action Plan places a strong emphasis on community engagement. In Fall 2024, we launched the first round of consultations, inviting community members to complete a survey on how EDI can be advanced at TMU. Half of the respondents identified fostering community and a sense of belonging as the top priority, underscoring that belonging is fundamental to progress.

In March and April 2025, we held tabling sessions with staff, faculty and students to explore what “belonging” means at TMU. We are grateful for the strong participation and valuable insights shared during these sessions.

Looking ahead, the next phase of consultations will expand to include initiatives engaging the broader community, as well as focused sessions with students, faculty, staff and community groups to gather further ideas and feedback.

Join a community conversation

On June 12, 2025, we will host a community conversation for staff to discuss what “belonging” at TMU means to you and its impact on your personal, academic and professional life. Staff members who wish to participate can register now (external link) .

Additional community conversations for faculty and students will take place in Fall 2025. Stay tuned for more details.

Your contributions are essential to advancing EDI at TMU and will help shape the university’s vision and priorities to drive meaningful, lasting change.
