Biography:

The Association of Early Childhood Educators Ontario (AECEO) is the professional association for ECEs in Ontario. Our primary purpose is to advocate for decent work, professional pay and respect and recognition for all ECEs. My work at the AECEO is different every day - we collaborate and listen to ECEs working in the field, analyze and respond to government policy and funding, meet with decision-makers to advocate for ECEs, support the sector through information sharing, webinars and professional learning, and build the collective voice of ECEs and early years staff across Ontario through our Decent Work Communities of Practice.

My experience in the MA ECS program was transformative in many ways. In the MA program I was introduced to new theories, ways of thinking, and approaches to early childhood that deeply impacted how I understood my role as an ECE and my responsibility as an activist. The Professors I encountered in my time at the university shifted my world as they truly believed in us as competent and capable, and respected the ideas, knowledge and experiences we brought to our education. They created a space where knowledge was shared reciprocally, with a lot of time for dialogue and thinking together. This allowed me to take risks, explore new ideas, and build my confidence in my own capacity.

In the MA program I was also exposed to new career pathways that I would not have thought possible, and I was encouraged to see myself in those roles. The safe and caring culture in the MA program supported me to be bold, take chances, and go after a career that reflected my ethical commitments and where I could lead with my values and passion. I am endlessly grateful for my time at the university and all those I encountered along the way.
