Mehrunnisa Ahmad Ali

Dr. Ali has an M.A. in Teaching and Learning from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Teaching, Curriculum and Social Policy from Michigan State University. She has worked as a primary school teacher, as founding Director of the first Teachers' Resource Center, and as a professor at the Aga Khan University in Pakistan. She currently teaches research in three graduate programs at Ryerson University. 

Dr. Ali’s research currently focuses on immigrant and refugee children, youth and families. Her video documentary Syria was once a beautiful country…(see https://vimeo.com/503310840 (external link)  ), also available with Arabic and French captions, has been viewed in many regions of the world. Her edited book entitled “Ethical issues in research with refugee children, youth and families” is under peer review. Her forthcoming book ‘Colonization of Immigrant Families’ (UBC Press) documents the complicity of Canadian institutions in promoting policies, practices, and discourses that sustain power imbalances among peoples from different countries. 

Countribution to the project: Dr. Ali will be responsible for the overall leadership of the project. She will maintain administrative and financial project oversight and facilitate collaboration among the research teams. As a researcher for over 25 years in the Global South and the Global North, Dr. Ali brings multiple perspectives to this project’s central issues.
