This session presents a systems approach to understanding food safety regulation by examining the interdependence of industry supply chain management, government regulation, and civil liability in efforts to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. The session will focus especially on the central role of CSR in developing and implementing private food safety standards. The session offers practical reforms that will strengthen the food safety system’s capacity to learn from its mistakes and identify cost-effective food safety efforts capable of producing measurable public health benefits.

He is the author of several books, including Outbreak: Foodborne Illness and the Struggle for Food Safety (University of Chicago Press 2019), Kosher: Private Regulation in the Age of Industrial Food (Harvard University Press 2013), and has published extensively in law journals and elsewhere. Lytton has B.A. and J.D. degrees from Yale University. He is licensed to practice law in New York, Ohio, and Georgia, and in 2018 was elected to membership in the American Law Institute.
