Why did you choose creative industries and which modules did you choose?
I chose Creative Industries because I saw myself working in a creative field and contributing to creative projects. I really liked the program because it had the core business background paired with the ability to customize my degree with creative modules. I chose Storytelling in Media and Professional Communication.
Where are you working now and what do you do in your role?
I’m working for IKEA Canada as a Commercial Public Relations Specialist. I oversee media relations, for all consumer related product launches, and our national content creator and influencer program. My previous PR internships paired with what I learned in the program provided me with the knowledge and experience to take on various roles at IKEA and eventually grow into a bigger position within their PR department.
How have you applied what you learned in the program to your professional life?
Creative Industries provided me with core principles and insights that I apply regularly, including drafting communications, pitching media, and sculpting a strong oral presentation. The program also gave me solid understanding of the business side of different projects I’m involved with and allowed me to look at things from a more holistic perspective.
What advice would you give to current creative industries students wondering about their professional futures?
Take the time to build genuine relationships with your peers, professors, and industry professionals and always be your authentic self. We live in such a fast-paced world where it’s easy to be someone you’re not. Stay true to yourself no matter what, because you’ll never regret it.
