Why did you choose Creative Industries as your undergrad program?

I chose Creative Industries because I was interested in fashion, journalism, and entrepreneurship and it was the ideal program to teach me all three. My modules were The Fashion Industry and The Business and Practice of News (journalism).

What has your professional journey been like so far, and how have you applied what you learned in the program?

I started as a freelance writer for different publications and used my journalism courses to pitch topics and craft my voice for each publication. I also used my fashion and marketing skills when I worked at MLSE on their fashion and lifestyle brands. I used my knowledge to direct photoshoots and transform each brand’s digital strategy, which translated to successful in-venue and out-of-home advertising. My school experience also helped me get a job on The Marilyn Denis Show where I got my first taste of storytelling for live television and realized I loved the industry – it even inspired me to do my master’s degree in digital media.

Where are you working now and what do you do in your role?

I am a Content Producer for Breakfast Television, where I create relevant and engaging segments for the show. This includes pitching ideas, chasing stories, pre-interviewing guests, editing video, prepping the hosts and much more. It’s a really rewarding job because I get to find stories that don’t usually get told and give them a platform. Seeing past guests start new businesses, give back to communities, and just build on the impact they had from a brief TV segment is the most rewarding. I love that I have a hand in choosing the powerful stories that get told on the air.

What advice would you give to current creative industries students wondering about their professional futures?

Networking is extremely valuable, and one of the best ways to do this is by tapping into the knowledge and experiences of our professors. Building relationships with them during class time and their office hours is invaluable. And who knows – your future mentor could be right in front of you.
