Physical signage
As a university that is proud to be in the downtown core, there are a variety of signs on campus that include our institution’s name in more than 10,000 places! Here’s a summary of how Facilities Management and Development is updating signage on campus in partnership with our Marketing and Creative Services colleagues.
Signage
To start, we’ve inventoried exterior and interior signage that appears on buildings and throughout our campus such as campus-wide amenity signage, health and safety signage and legacy departmental identification signs.
Where possible, work has been done to debrand wayfinding signage at the pedestrian-level throughout campus, both indoors and outdoors to plan for its removal and update, as well as some more visible outdoor signage. Some signs still remain, such as those that could not easily be updated or those that include email addresses that will change in December.
We’ve also begun adding new signage that reflects our new name including new street and building banner signs across campus.
In the coming months, you’ll continue to see changes on campus as we work to update our campus signage, including the removal of some of the more prominent and large signs on campus such as RU logos on buildings. This should be complete by Spring/Summer 2023.
Important note: Facilities Management and Development is overseeing the replacement of statutory institutional signage, which includes washroom information, health and safety signs, amenity signage and public wayfinding signage in shared spaces.
Examples include:
- washroom information signage
- building evacuation maps
- elevator information
- building and floor directories in lobbies and by elevators
- standard departmental identification for wayfinding in main corridors
Departmental signage within department-controlled spaces and non-standard, customized signs owned by departments should be replaced by local departments.
Examples include:
- staff directories
- signage within department-controlled offices or spaces that is not statutory
- non-standard, customized signs (metal signs, wall graphics, window treatments)
Departmental wayfinding and office signage can be ordered through Modulex, Toronto Metropolitan University's signage vendor of record, using the link to client portal on the Facilities Help Desk signage web page. For non-standard custom signage, departments may wish to contact their original vendor or request guidance from the Facilities Help Desk (Fixit) at fixit@torontomu.ca.
Additionally, departments who may be unsure if their sign falls under Facilities’ purview can contact fixit@torontomu.ca.
