The TMU Lights program allows members of the Toronto Metropolitan University community to request colour changes to the programmable LED street light poles on Gould and Victoria streets and the LED lights on the Church Street bridge to highlight important themes, events, and causes.
The LED lights can produce dynamic ambient effects in a wide range of colours and offer a unique opportunity for community engagement through light, architecture, and social media.
Lighting can be seen from sundown until sun up each day.
Read the Terms of Application below and make a request by filling out our (google form) Lighting Proposal Form (external link) .
Lights in Action
Terms of Application
Toronto Metropolitan University will consider lighting proposals for various events, themes and/or causes.
Please note that lighting cannot be considered for:
- commercial requests (e.g. product launches, corporate events)
- requests related to specific political parties or candidates
- personal occasions (e.g. birthdays, anniversaries)
Lighting proposals are at the sole discretion of university management and not subject to appeals or negotiation. Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- timeliness (ie. how is the preferred date for your lighting proposal relevant?)
- tie-in to on-campus events (ie. does the lighting proposal compliment an on-campus function?)
- inclusivity (ie. does the lighting proposal support the promotion of inclusivity and diversity?)
Due to the volume of applications, we may not be able to accommodate all requests, although preference will be given to first-time proposals.
Applicants will receive an e-mail response within 15 days of their proposal stating whether or not it has been approved.
To be considered, all requests must be:
- received in writing by completion of the TMU Lights (google form) Lighting Proposal Form (external link)
- completed by a representative of the group or organization making the request
- accompanied by a valid university email address
- received by Toronto Metropolitan University at least 30 days in advance of lighting date requested
Toronto Metropolitan University maintains lightings for Valentines Day (pink/red), St. Patrick's Day (green), Pride Month (rainbow - only on LED street light poles on Gould Street ), Canada Day (red/white), Truth and Reconciliation (orange), Halloween (orange), Remembrance Day (red), Christmas (red and green).
If your request is confirmed, all efforts will be made to grant the lighting on the date requested, however the university reserves the right to make adjustments to the schedule as necessary and this may result in modifying the timing of your lighting or rescheduling the date.
