Understanding the Spatial Distribution of Elderly Victimization in the City of Toronto: 2014 and 2015 ©2019
Experts believe that the rate of senior victimization (65+) will increase in response to an aging population. The purpose of this study was to implement several statistical and spatial techniques in order to understand the spatial distribution of victimization in Toronto, as well as to identify some underlying socioeconomic risk facts associated with such crime. Furthermore, a comparative approached was also adopted. By including youth victimization data (15 and under), the study was able to identify some similarities and dissimilarities between the selected age segments. The maps generated in this study were able to identify several crime hot spots throughout the City of Toronto and were able to determine some underlying socioeconomic risk factors, despite the statistical results indicating a non-quantitative relationship between variables. Results from this study can be used as a guideline when creating and implementing future social programs and crime management strategies targeting a rapidly aging population.
