The Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine's General Surgery and Surgical Foundations Residency Programs received accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in October of 2024.

TMU’s General Surgery Program will graduate competent, knowledgeable and technically adept surgical consultants prepared to serve in both community and academic centres. Residents will receive early and diverse exposure to all clinical areas of general surgery, from fundamentals and principles of surgery to advanced surgical practice and operative skills. The program will also equip residents with a solid foundation for continuing medical education for their entire surgical careers and for any desired subspecialty surgery training.

How to Apply

Applications to the General Surgery program are only accepted through. All applicants will be notified through CaRMS Online and TMU will send email invitations directly to applicants selected for an interview.

Note that three reference letters are required with your application. Reference letters from one or more general surgeons are strongly recommended, but not mandatory. Referees should be clinical preceptors or faculty members who know you well enough to comment on your interest in a surgical career, medical knowledge, clinical skills, ability to collaborate and to communicate with others, and performance compared to your peers.
