Honouring researchers leading outstanding scholarly, research and creative activities

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) will celebrate the scholarly, research and creative (SRC) activities of 17 researchers, representing a cross-section of research disciplines, during the annual Toronto Met Awards Gala on May 8, 2025.

“I am honoured to recognize the remarkable achievements of these distinguished scholars, whose contributions are transforming the field of health care, ensuring that Toronto Metropolitan University remains at the forefront of emerging technologies and creating new knowledge that can be applied to solve some of our most pressing issues,” said Steven N. Liss, TMU’s vice-president, research and innovation. “Congratulations to all of this year’s awardees.”

Faculty members are nominated by their peers for the university-wide awards in acknowledgment of their exceptional SRC activities.

Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award

This award is presented to faculty members who have made an outstanding contribution in their area of expertise while at TMU.

Michael Olson, Canada Research Chair in Molecular Cell Biology and a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biology, is a renowned cancer researcher. Advancing our understanding of cancer cells, his research into Rho GTPase proteins and actin cytoskeletons is leading to the creation of new cancer treatments.

Early SRC Career Excellence Award

Recognized as a leading expert in addictions research both nationally and internationally, Andrew (Hyounsoo) Kim, professor in the Department of Psychology, is a prolific young researcher with more than 120 peer-reviewed publications to his name. His current projects include the creation of a transdiagnostic treatment model for both substance and behavioural addictions. 

Collaborative SRC Award

Farrokh Janabi-Sharifi, professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Mechatronics Engineering, is transforming the way robotics are used in applications from farming to surgery. His groundbreaking work in optomechatronics, robotics and automation technologies has made him a sought-after collaborator internationally, and his work has resulted in four patents, six technology transfers and substantial funding. 

Atefeh (Atty) Mashatan, professor in the School of Information Technology Management, is a leading scholar in cyber resilience and security. Her work is building our knowledge of emerging technologies like quantum computing that will enhance cybersecurity for enterprises. As the Canada Research Chair in Quality of Security (QoSec) Framework for Internet-of-Things (IoT), she is leading critical multidisciplinary, cross-sector research.

Knowledge Mobilization and Engagement Award

Anatoliy Gruzd, the Canada Research Chair in Privacy-Preserving Digital Technologies and professor in the School of Information Technology Management, is transforming the way that scholars engage with social media, enhancing their research capacity in areas such as education, health and politics. As the Social Media Lab’s Director, his work is creating new awareness of the benefits and pitfalls of social media adoption.

Social Innovation and Action SRC Award

Director of the Cognitive Aging Laboratory and professor in the Department of Psychology, Lixia Yang collaborates with community and industry partners to improve the lives of vulnerable populations like older adults and immigrants. Her research uses tools like prevention and intervention programs to promote resilience among older adults, helping them stay mentally strong and connected.
