Nursing professor honoured with election to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU)’s professor Sepali Guruge has been elected as a fellow in the prestigious Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
A nursing researcher with the Faculty of Community Services, professor Guruge has been recognized by her peers as one of the 71 new fellows elected into the academy, as the organization announced in August. She will be inducted in an upcoming ceremony in Ottawa on October 20. The academy honours excellence among Canada’s health and biomedical scientists and scholars, electing fellows from across a wide range of disciplines.
Professor Guruge’s research focuses on the complex intersections between health, immigration, partner violence, and aging. She examines issues of social inclusion, access to care, and inequities in the health care system, with a commitment to improving the resiliency of marginalized populations. She has previously been elected as a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Nursing in 2021, and in 2014 was an inaugural member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. “I am very honoured,” said professor Guruge of this new recognition. “It is one of the highest recognitions in Canada for health science researchers.”
“I’m thrilled to offer my congratulations to professor Guruge,” said Steven N. Liss, TMU’s vice-president, research and innovation. “Her research has resulted in real-world impacts and policy solutions, improving health care equity and resiliency for underserved communities. This is a well-deserved recognition of her work.”
