Diversifying Psychology Recruitment Event

The Department of Psychology at Ryerson University is hosting its first Diversifying Psychology Recruitment Event. Our goal is to provide more information and insight into applying to graduate school in Psychology to enhance opportunity and access for students from traditionally underrepresented groups.  This year, our special focus is on Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC). The event will be held completely online on Friday September 25, 2020 from 1pm-5pm and will include a panel discussion of BIPoC scholars, a workshop on how to create a competitive application, and a chance to network with current psychology graduate students in a virtual environment.

When:  Friday September 25, 2020 from 1pm-5pm via Zoom

Agenda:  

• A panel discussion with three BIPOC scholars on their experiences from graduate school to their current career paths, 
• A workshop on making a competitive application, and 
• Networking “breakout rooms” with current grad student volunteers. 

Who is eligible? We welcome students from a variety of underrepresented groups (based on racial/ethnic identity, (dis)ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, first generation university students, etc.) to attend the event; however, for our inaugural event we will be focusing on individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC). Our goal is to help prepare prospective students for the graduate admissions process at Ryerson University and more broadly, providing an opportunity for networking with graduate students, and highlighting voices of BIPOC academics.

Room in our networking session with current graduate students is limited, so those breakout rooms will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. However, we will prioritize self-identified BIPOC students who are closer to applying to graduate school.

The graduate program in psychology at Ryerson University is committed to equity and diversity. This event is one part of many projects our department will be taking on in order to help diversify psychology. We believe that it is critical for psychology to reflect the diversity of our country and that psychology as a discipline needs a variety of voices and perspectives contributing to the creation of knowledge and clinical practice. 

Please note: the organisers of this event are not involved in the admissions process but our aim is to encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply to Ryerson and grad school in general.
